Colin
Coots was raised on his family's farm, an Angus cattle and
Hackney pony breeding farm in Upstate New York. Both of
his parents were teachers, and his father, a master craftsman
and restorer of fine antique furniture.
He
started Kindergarten in 1949, knowing he wanted to be an
artist. In high school he distinguished himself on the football
field, in wrestling, and through his art, earning recognition
over a broad competitive area.

Mr.
Coots graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1968
with a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Art, majoring in sculpture,
with minors in painting and ceramics. In addition, Colin
studied with Thomas B. Cornell (a protégé
of Leonard Baskin) of Bowdoin College in Maine.
Colin's
interest in nature and native people prompted him to join
Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA). In 1968 he was
assigned by VISTA to a remote Eskimo village in Stebbens,
Alaska. Upon returning, he taught art in public schools,
and in the evening schools of Genesee Community College
and Rochester Institute of Technology. In 1981 he joined
the staff of the Margaret Woodbury Strong Museum in Rochester,
New York which , in addition to having interactive learning
environments, creative and educational programs for children,
also houses the world's most comprehensive doll and miniature
collection.
Colin
left the Strong Museum to more fully dedicate himself to
the development of his own work, as well as his commitment
to teaching art. During the past 10 years he has been sought
by schools, colleges, and organizations throughout the East
Coast for his "Artist in Residence" programs in
sculpture, painting, drawing, pottery, and portfolio preparation.
Colin's
work has been exhibited in juried shows at the Cleveland
Museum of Art and the Memorial Art Gallery of Rochester,
New York, and in numerous galleries and private collections
nationally, as well as the Richard Green Gallery of London.

Dear
Mr. Coots-
From a happy Mom ...
Just wanted to take a moment to thank you for doing
a portrait of my son.
You visited his school a few months back. (He was
the really handsome boy with the dark hair, beautiful
eyes, glasses, and was wearing a black turtleneck
that day. Ok...lol...but I'm mom so that's my description
of him and I'm sticking to it.)
The portrait is beautiful.
Thank You. I will love it forever...you captured
him in a moment of his life that I can adore for
the rest of mine...there really aren't words it
would seem.
So, thanks again.
It's really quite spectacular what you do.
